Two-Touch Finishing

Description

2-Shot Finishing Drill

The athlete will start by playing a 1:2 around the pole, and then checking away to position themselves behind the mannequin. They will take their touch across the face of the mannequin (away from the pole) before finishing. After the first finish the athlete should work back to the mannequin, checking away again before receiving a second pass where their touch should go across the mannequin (between pole and mannequin) before shooting again.

PROGRESSIONS :

1) Repeat on the other side.

2) Alter angle - play the passes on the opposite side of the goal (leaving equipment as it is) with the first shot coming between the mannequin and pole, and the second coming from a positive touch down the line beyond the pole.

Key Coaching Points

  • Body position - have hips facing where we want the touch to go, using the back foot to take the touch
  • Footwork - move feet to meet the pass on our back foot, as well as keeping the ball slightly ahead of them allowing them to step into the touch
  • Angle - ensure the touch goes beyond the defender and creates an angle to strike through the ball

You may also discuss the finishing 'ABCs', so talk about the approach to the ball, then balance when striking, and then making a good contact on the ball.
