Footwork + Changing Direction
Description
The athlete will start behind the two poles. The coach will call either black/white and the athlete should react and touch the pole called before moving forward to the ladder in front and work their feet through it.
PROGRESSIONS:
- Bounce pass with the player before calling the colour. Perform them either in front of the ladder, or the other side of the poles to include an additional change of direction
- Alter footwork through the ladder
- Add in bounce passes / volleys as they work through the ladder
Key Coaching Points
Ladder work :
- 3-step : 2 feet in, 1 foot out in a zig zag motion.
- 5 step : 2 feet in 2 out, with an additional step on the outside to help shift body weight effectively
Ball work through ladders :
- Bounce Passes - roll the ball in for a 1:2, focus on them stepping into the pass, twisting knee to point to the side and pushing through the ball with instep
- Volleys - gently throw the ball at knee height. Focus on their knee position and a solid contact with the instep
- May look at adding in controlling with the thigh then playing a volley if the athlete is capable.
