Changing Direction & Reactions (CPCDR)
Description
The coach starts with the ball in their hands. The player reacts off the bounce of the ball.
First bounce, player sprints towards the coach.
Second bounce, player changes direction and sprints back the way they came.
The player must quickly react while changing direction with a good technique. If the coach does not bounce the ball the second time, the player must continue to sprint until they get past the coach on the other side.
Key Coaching Points
Changing Direction
- Player starts to decelerate with baby steps (do not go to a full stop)
- Depending which way they are turning, the player should push off their furthest foot. Knee should be slightly bent with the player being able to push off the inside of the front of the foot. The face (inside) of the planting foot should point in the direction which the player intends to turn, as the player would when passing the ball.
- The hips & shoulders should open and face in the direction which the player is running to. Turning of the hips should take place as the standing foot is planted to turn.
