Changing Direction

Description

LAYOUT : 1 x black cone, 1 x white cone & 1 x slalom pole form a triangle, with 10 yards between each. Place 1 hurdle in the middle of the two cones, directly in line with the pole.

The player will complete 4 x 2-footed jumps over the hurdle. The coach will then call either 'black' or 'white' for the player to then run around the corresponding colour, change direction and run to the pole.

Progression 1:

The player will face backwards, with their back facing the pole. They will continue to complete 2-footed jumps over the hurdle, play bounce passes either side of the hurdle. When the colour is called the player will turn 180 degrees, sprint to the pole, before changing direction again back towards to colour that was called.

Progression 2:

The player will now complete single leg jumps over the hurdle, using their non-standing foot to complete a volley after each jump. Again when the coach calls a colour, they will turn 180 degree's and run to the pole. As they change direction at the pole, the coach will roll the ball to their feet, for them to dribble to the cone where they will complete another change of direction with the ball and dribble up to the pole.

Optional Progressions:

- Vary up the movement over the hurdle, ensuring it is challenging for ach athlete

- Rather than rolling the ball to the player at the pole, throw it in the air for them to control

Key Coaching Points

To improve changing direction, we must develop a players strength within their legs. This is the reason for using the hurdle, to encourage more explosive movements.

"Load to Explode" - step into the turn, lowering your body into your standing foot by bending your hip, knee & ankle. This will 'load' the muscles ready to 'explode' out of the turn.
