Awareness & Dribbling Practice
Description
The player will dribble through the line of cones, keeping control of the ball. The coach will stand in front of the player and do one of the following:
- Hold up numbers with their hands, and ask the player to call the number they see
- Hold up different coloured markers, and ask the player to call the colour they see
- Throw tennis balls to the player and ask them to catch and throw the ball back
The most important part of this practice is that the player carries on dribbling through the cones whilst performing the above actions. This will force the player to think about multiple things at once.
You can challenge the player further by changing the dribbilng pattern, here are some ideas:
- Right foot only dribbling
- Left foot only dribbling
- Both feet dribbling
Key Coaching Points
- Can the player maintain the quality of their dribbling whilst being aware of what is in front of them?
- Don't be afraid to start off slow until the player is comfortable and then increase the speed
- Ask the player to keep checking up and down to maintain the quality of the dribble, whilst being aware of what is in front of them.
