Ball Mastery - Turns [CPBMT]
Description

The player takes a touch forward before completing a turn.

Turns

  • Outside hook
  • Inside hook
  • Stop & turn
Key Coaching Points

Standing foot ahead of the ball

Using the hips to turn with the ball

Changing Direction & Reactions (CPCDR)
Description

The coach starts with the ball in their hands. The player reacts off the bounce of the ball.

First bounce, player sprints towards the coach.

Second bounce, player changes direction and sprints back the way they came.

The player must quickly react while changing direction with a good technique. If the coach does not bounce the ball the second time, the player must continue to sprint until they get past the coach on the other side.

Key Coaching Points

Changing Direction

  • Player starts to decelerate with baby steps (do not go to a full stop)
  • Depending which way they are turning, the player should push off their furthest foot. Knee should be slightly bent with the player being able to push off the inside of the front of the foot. The face (inside) of the planting foot should point in the direction which the player intends to turn, as the player would when passing the ball.
  • The hips & shoulders should open and face in the direction which the player is running to. Turning of the hips should take place as the standing foot is planted to turn.
Turning on the Safe Side [CPTSS]
Description:

The player plays a bounce pass with coach on the inside of the mannequin, after-which they open on the other side facing the rebounder to receive the ball. The players takes their first touch towards the rebounder before performing a 180-degree turn. Once the player has turned, the player would then take a touch before turning again to face the rebounder. The plays a pass against the rebounder before playing back to the coach.

Key Coaching Points:

Safe Side

  • The furthers part away from the defender.
  • If the player has the defender on the left side, the player should keep the ball on the outside of their right foot furtherest away from the defender.

Awareness

  • Player should be aware of the defenders to make sure the ball is safe.
  • In situations where there is a second defender, the player should prioritise the closest defender.

Turns

  • Outside hook
  • Inside hook
  • Stop & turn

  • When turning, be aware of the defenders to make sure that the body is protecting the ball, especially in the exit of the turn.
Protecting the Ball [CPPB]
Description:

The player comes towards the ball to receive it on the move towards the mannequin. As the player gets closer, player gets between the ball and player while performing a turn to face back towards the coach. The player quickly creates a new angle before receiving the ball in a tight 1v1 situation before getting their shot off.

Key Coaching Points:

Protecting the ball

  • Player must get their body in the way, leading with their foot and arm to create distance between themselves and the defender.

Turns

  • Outside hook
  • Inside hook
  • Stop & turn

Keep the ball on the safe side, make it difficult for the defender to challenge for the ball. Create space between themselves and the defender on the turn so they can face on the defender again to go into a 1v1. Change of speed is important to get them to rely on their own reactions.
